Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences Friday Seminar
Friday, February 14, 2025 at 12:15 pm JILA Foothills Room Alejandro Erostegui, ICE-CSIC (Barcelona) "The impact of mergers and the environment on AGNs in dwarf galaxies" ![]() Abstract:Understanding how supermassive black-holes (SMBH) grow can be determinant to explain their origin. This growth occurs via two main channels: matter accretion (observed as an AGN) and coalescence with other SMBHs, both of which may result from a galactic merger. In the massive regime it has been observed that galaxy interactions can trigger AGN, however, it is not clear if this behavior extends to the low-mass regime, which is expected to be the dominant population at high redshifts. In fact, there seem to be contradicting results. In this talk I will show the results we obtained using the MaNGA survey regarding how the AGN fraction of dwarf galaxies evolves throughout the merger process, how significant are galactic interactions for triggering these AGN and what is the role of the environment in AGN triggering, while reconciling these seemingly contrary results. I will also provide a brief introduction about the DESI survey.
