Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences Friday Seminar
Friday, November 06, 2026 at 12:15 pm JILA Foothills Room Niranjan Roy, University of Connecticut "Synthetic Emission-Line Observations of Cosmological FIRE Galaxies: From Multiphase Outflows to Little Red Dots" ![]() Abstract:Interpreting emission-line data from JWST, ALMA, and other integral field spectroscopy facilities requires synthetic observations of cosmological simulations with comparable fidelity. In this talk, I will introduce a pipeline we have developed that couples the CHIMES chemistry network with the 3D Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code RADMC-3D to generate resolved synthetic IFU data cubes from cosmological FIRE simulations. I will then demonstrate how this tool successfully disentangles gas phases and kinematics in a z~2.3 multiphase galactic outflow. Finally, I will discuss our application of this pipeline alongside continuum modeling using SKIRT to JWST’s Little Red Dots at z~4-8, showing that their unique spectral signatures point to a hybrid origin of LRDs as a combination of ultra- compact star formation and central black hole activity.
