"An Overview of Galactic Gas Accretion"

A Pretty Image from the Talk

Abstract:

Galaxies would have stopped forming stars early in the universe without ongoing gas accretion. I will discuss the indirect evidence that gas accretion occurs throughout cosmic time, the expected modes of gas accretion, and the direct observational evidence of it occurring. The latter is limited because it requires knowledge of the position and velocity of the accreting gas relative to the galaxy. I will present some direct evidence for gas accretion in the Local Group.
