Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences Colloquium
Monday, March 01, 2010 at 4:00 PM JILA Auditorium Edward Stone, Caltech "The Thirty Meter Telescope: the Universe in High Definition" ![]() Abstract:The success of the twin Keck telescopes with segmented ten-meter mirrors and adaptive optics has led to the design of the Thirty Meter Telescope. The increased capability of TMT will allow us to study the first luminous objects in the universe, trace the formation of galaxies and their connection with supermassive black holes, explore the nature of dark matter and dark energy, observe planets around other stars, and search for those that could support life. With the completion of the design and the selection of Mauna Kea as the site, TMT should begin revealing the universe with unprecedented clarity before the end of the decade.
