Monday, April 12, 2010 at 4:00 PM JILA Auditorium Leo Blitz, Univ California Berkeley "Counter-Intuitive Star Formation"  Abstract:I will show that the star formation rate on cosmic scales at all redshifts is controlled by and equal to the supply of ionized gas; the molecular and atomic gas is just a phase through which the gas must flow. Also I will show that about 25% of all ellipticals and SO galaxies contain substantial amounts of molecular gas, up to 5x10^9 solar masses.
